Endoscopy is a procedure wherein an image capturing flexible device is put into the system to be viewed. In gastro-intestinal (G.I.) endoscopy ,the device called endoscope is put into stomach through mouth for upper G.I. and to colon through anal opening for lower G.I. endoscopy.
There is minimal discomfort only. The inside of the intestine is viewed for common diseases like ulcers, tumors and varices etc. Those can be viewed nicely and video or stills images can be captured .
This has made diagnosis of early cancers of stomach possible as compared to the earlier times.Tissue can be taken for examination for confirmed diagnosis.
Therapeutic procedures for certain diseases can be carried out through it.Most common procedures are treating bleeding ulcers, ligating esophagial varices and polyp removal.endoscopy
