Features and Management of Prostate Infection
Men suffer from prostate infection mostly as a part of urinary tact infection. Prostate; a sex gland in male, surrounds the initial part of urethra; where it commences from the urinary bladder and is chest-nut shaped; consisting of fibrous, muscular and glandular elements. It is communicated with the urethra and secretes a fluid rich in fructose and other ingredients during sex act; probably to nourish and facilitate the sperm migration. It may sometimes get infected by the bacteria from the infected urine of urinary tract infection (UTI).
Infection of the prostate is called prostatitis.
It may cause:
Pain in the anterior part of anus,
Fever with chill and rigors,
Sometimes blood in the seminal fluid
and
Passage of mucous threads per urethra especially in the morning during defecation.
It can be diagnosed by per rectal digital examination of prostate; which is painful to the palpating finger, may feel swollen and irregular. Pus may be seen coming out, if prostate is massaged a little during the digital examination.
An ultrasonogram is an invaluable tool in the diagnosis as well as the semen analysis. A culture and sensitivity test of urine is to be performed to find out the exact antibiotic requirement.
Little prolonged antibiotic treatment may be required along with daily prostatic massage to expel out the contents. It will invariably contain the infection and cure the patient.
Sometimes, it may become chronic; and sometimes, an abscess forms in the prostate. Prostatic abscess may need to be drained.
Prostatitis is invariably a very painful condition and sometimes simulates a perianal abscess. Careful history taking and rectal examination will clinch the diagnosis.

Image via WikipediaAspirin, a cheap drug first used for headache and as a pain-killer, that was discontinued for causing gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcerations. Subsequently, used in small doses for cardiovascular disease particularly in prevention of heart attack. Its role in treatment of rheumatic disease sill remains undisputed. Again it was used for prevention or early detection of colon cancer. And, now researchers say, it reduces breast cancer metastasis to some extent. More study may be required for recommending it for the same.
Here are some of the early symptoms and signs of cancer breast. Self assessment is the key for success in breast cancer outcome. Screening tests for high risk ladies is recommended and may actually aid in early detection and treatment of it.
Here are some of the early symptoms and signs of cancer breast. Self assessment is the key for success in breast cancer outcome. Screening tests for high risk ladies is recommended and may actually aid in early detection and treatment of it.
An aspirin at least two days a week significantly reduced breast cancer death risk by 64% to 71%, Michelle D. Holmes, MD, DrPH, of the Channing Laboratory at Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and colleagues reported online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The risk reduction for distant metastasis in breast cancer survivors taking aspirin at least two days a week was a significant 43% to 60% in the analysis of the Nurses’ Health Study data through 2006. These results could have “considerable clinical importance,” they wrote, given the drug’s relatively benign adverse effects compared with cancer chemotherapy agents as well as its other benefits in preventing colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. However, she cautioned that aspirin isn’t risk-free, noting it can cause GI bleeding. Further study is needed to determine the mechanism and also to prospectively confirm the benefit, the investigators agreed. |

Fibroadenoma is a benign breast disease due to aberrations in normal development and involution (ANDI). This is a disease mostly seen in the time of breast development and involution. It is called as “breast mouse” because of the looseness in movement of the firm to hard tumor tissue inside the normal breast tissue. It can be of different size and shape; usually globular and less than 5cms in diameter when reported first. It may sometimes become large enough to occupy the whole breast. It is very rarely turns malignant. But when acquires a large size to be called as giant fibroadenoma may have associated features of malignancy; and that is the reason why, it should be subjected to histopathological study after removal. Giant fibroadenaomas should be subjected to fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), mammography and if required, other
investigations like ultrasonogram to rule out malignancy before surgery. Removal of giant fibroadenomas may require removal of a large chunk of normal breast tissue and sometimes removal of the whole breast.
