Fighting Back Swine Flu

Swine Flu H1N1 virus influenza 3.0

Bacteria, viruses, fungi and other parasites are the primitive inhabitants of this earth, if the Darwin’s theory is correct. Animals, either created from cosmos or from this earth came more likely as invaders to their world. They survived as they struggled for existence and survived as “survival of the fittest’. Every little space in this earth, air and water is full of those bugs. Still animal survives and continuously defend at each moment to survive. Human came last to the earth and chosen many animals to remain along with them for various reasons. Human keep pigs for the purpose of food. In this way they contact diseases from them. This swine flu 2009 pandemic, if at all is the direct consequence of that.
Human defense constantly fights against microbes to keep the person healthy. It is when the defense is overpowered by the invading organism a person suffers from a disease. In case of viruses, particularly the flu virus the defense is very poor to absent as the antigenic character changes frequently. That is why, a vaccine active in one season becomes ineffective in the next season.
It is in the news that pandemic is over. It is alleged that the pandemic is a paper tiger created by some scientists of WHO having a link with the vaccine producing companies and benefited themselves. There is sufficient smoke in it, relying on the report; I quote; “As per the last information available, a total of 76,302 cases of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 and 2,054 deaths due to the same have been reported from South-East Asia Region (SEAR) as per information on August 5, 2010”. There might be more deaths from malaria and dengue in each year in countries like India and Africa.
When the incidence of disease is decreasing worldwide it showing a growing trend in India, particularly in an Indian province like Orissa and more affected is the capital city of Bhubaneswar. There is panic buying of masks and vaccines as usual.
It is not the same scenario as 2009, when first the disease appeared and spread. Now effective vaccines are available as well as medications. Vaccination, though can be opted by anybody is not advised for all, primarily should cover the risk groups like medical and paramedical personnel; patients having prior heart disease, asthma, pregnant lady and children etc.
It can be prevented to a larger extent by following simple tricks;
•    Avoiding crowded places.
•    Confining patients to their place if suspected to be suffering from swine flu and shifting to designated hospitals.
•    Washing hands frequently which might have been contaminated and there is likelihood of contaminating one’s own self.
•    Using masks to check the spread through droplet; the conglomerate of viral particle, moisture and/or dust in atmosphere; though the size of the virus itself is smaller than the pore size of the common surgical masks.
•    Keeping the pigs away from the human habitation and reporting for unnatural deaths among those.
The authorities stress on good practices to remain healthy in the world of bacteria and to protect oneself from the tentacles of swine flu in particular. We are afraid of the spread of this disease in Indian cities because of the conditions of the cities where sanitation is still a luxury.

Drinking Alcohol Deranges Biological Clock

The biological clock that regulates different hormonal activity thereby regulating sleep/awake cycle and other things may get deranged by chronic alcohol drinking.

Amplify’d from www.nlm.nih.gov

Chronic Drinking Linked to Circadian Disruptions

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Chronic drinking can disrupt production of the genes that control the body's daily biological (circadian) rhythms, leading to problems such as sleep disruption and mood changes, new research reports.

This indicates that alcoholics have lower levels of circadian clock gene production (or what researchers call "expression"), according to the study published online and in the November print issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

"In other words, chronic alcohol consumption was associated with a destruction of normal circadian clock gene expression. This altered expression is closely related to circadian rhythm dysfunction and might link to a variety of physiological problems, such as sleep/wake cycle dysregulation, depression, and even cancer," study corresponding author Sy-Jye Leu, a researcher at Taipei Medical University in Taiwan, said in a journal news release.

"This provides the first human evidence that chronic drinking can have long-term damaging effects on the expression of circadian rhythm-responsible genes. It also lends clinical support to previous reports of circadian rhythm dysregulation as a consequence of chronic drinking," Leu added.

Tackle Hunger with Water and Salad to Loose Pounds

Glass Of WaterImage by ex_magician via Flickr

A new research published in Medscape suggests that intake of about two cups of water approximately of 500 ml may help in reducing weight. The full article can be viewed there.

Hunger is a problem for newer entrants to the regime of weight loss. Decreasing intake of amount of food is a problem. Sometimes, amount of food can not be decreased due to hunger. That is because filling of stomach is an important factor amongst many others for satiety to come and hunger to disappear. Also it is the rising glucose level in blood after taking food and other hormonal mechanisms Viz. glucagon like peptides (GLP), to satisfy hunger and bring satiety.

That is why stomach has to be tricked to send a signal to the brain that it is full. That can happen with;

  • Intake of two glasses of plain water just before going for food.
  • Taking a good amount of salad of cucumber, carrot, onion, some spicy herbs and other ingredients to fill the stomach to some extent.
  • There after taking food slowly and masticating thoroughly for initial 15 minutes will start pouring some glucose to brain, informing that glucose is available and signal the satiety center to lessen food intake.

Interval eating is a constant problem for those who skip breakfast, and that causes more calorie intake unknowingly. This is also a problem for newer entrants to the dieting. It is suggested that taking a glass of water at that time will decrease hunger. They are advised not to skip breakfast which helps in many ways to balance weight loss. To balance the interval eating some fruits like apple, cucumber or carrot can be taken at the time of feeling hunger.

These look very trivial but has immense importance in loosing weight and suppress hunger of newer entrants to dieting.

ESC: Daily Coffee Limbers Up the Heart

Moderate coffee drinkers didn't differ in other dietary habits or in systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels compared with nondrinkers, though.

Multivariate analysis with regard to echocardiographically-measured aortic distensibility accounted for potential confounders including age, sex, physical activity status, creatinine levels, BMI, and diabetes status.

Most of the coffee drinkers in the study consumed traditional Greek blends, which Chrysohoou explained, have higher levels of phenol compounds thought to be protective for the heart than coffee typically consumed in the U.S.

Switching away from red meat could help women cut down on their heart disease risk, according to a large observational study.

A serving of chicken or turkey to replace one of beef, pork, or lamb would lower coronary heart disease risk 19% (95% confidence interval 3% to 33%), found Adam M. Bernstein, MD, ScD, of Harvard School of Public Health, and colleagues.

Other significant risk-reducing replacements reported online in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association included:
  • Nuts, for a 30% reduction (95% CI 17% to 42%) from a one serving per day substitute
  • Low-fat dairy, for a 13% reduction (95% CI 6% to 19%) from one daily serving swap
  • Fish, for a 24% reduction (95% CI 6% to 39%) from switching one serving daily

Overall, animal protein was associated with increased coronary heart disease risk (P=0.01 for trend), whereas vegetable protein appeared protective (P<0.0001 for trend).

But the types of fat present in these foods appeared to account for the difference as the relationships fell into nonsignificance after controlling for polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fat.

They pointed to several risky components of red and processed meats, including heme iron, high saturated fat, and heterocycline amines and advanced glycation end-products created by cooking them.

Nuts, fish, and other healthier protein sources not only lack those components but have other positive ones like fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats that would tend to be protective, the investigators noted.

Newer Treatments for Psoriasis

Here are some good news for patients of psoriasis.

Amplify’d from www.medscape.com

Psoriasis Responds Well to Switch From Etanercept to Adalimumab

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 12 - Results of a small prospective study suggest that adalimumab (Humira, Abbott) is an effective and safe treatment option for psoriasis patients who don't respond to etanercept (Enbrel, Amgen/Pfizer).

The Dutch researchers also report that the benefits of the second tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-blocker were just as good in patients with primary or secondary failure or intolerance to etanercept.

"The highest therapeutic efficacy of etanercept is after 24 weeks, which has been substantiated in all clinical trials with this drug," she added in an email. However, Dutch guidelines require an improvement of 50% in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 50) after 12 weeks of biologic treatment.

For patients who fail both drugs she recommends a switch to ustekinumab (Stelara, Centocor Ortho Biotech), a monoclonal antibody to human interleukin-12/23, "especially (in) patients who experience primary failure on both drugs (but this is not evidence-based). Perhaps a third TNF-inhibitor could also be effective."

This study was partially funded by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, now part of Pfizer. Four of seven authors also report having received fees from various pharmaceutical manufacturers, including Wyeth, Pfizer, Centocor and Abbott.

Morning After Contraceptive Pill

Sometimes morning after pill is required for unprotected sex to avoid unplanned pregnancy.

Amplify’d from www.reuters.com

FDA OKs new "morning-after" pill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Health officials on Friday approved a new, longer-lasting "morning-after" pill to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

The prescription drug, called ella, is made by French company HRA Pharma and will be sold in the United States by Watson Pharmaceuticals.

The drug will compete with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd's Plan B, which works for up to three days after intercourse. Plan B is available without a prescription for those aged 17 and older, but ella will require a prescription for all ages.

The Food and Drug Administration said it cleared ella based on two clinical trials that showed the drug was safe and effective. The drug "is not intended for routine use as a contraceptive," the FDA said in a statement.

"Every woman deserves every option available to prevent an unplanned pregnancy, and there are many reasons why a woman may face the risk of unintended pregnancy -- from failure or improper use of birth control, to sexual assault," Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement.

Ella is a type of selective progesterone receptor modulator, making it part of a class of drugs that interfere with the hormone progesterone that is crucial for pregnancy. The class also includes the abortion pill known as RU-486, or mifepristone, and sold as Danco Laboratories' Mifeprex.

Watson said the overall pregnancy rate for women who took ella within three days of sex was 1.9 percent, lower than the anticipated rate of 5.6 percent. For women who took the drug two days to five days after sex, the pregnancy rate was 2.2 percent, lower than an expected rate of 5.5 percent.

Hassle Free Way to Generate and Submit Google Sitemap to Search Engines Free

Image representing AddMe as depicted in CrunchBase

Image via CrunchBase

I, as a parson of limited knowledge about web site optimization and search engine optimization; wondered how to generate and submit a site-map of my blog to Google. As we know the importance of Google crawler to crawl our sites to get exposed to the world, it becomes essential to generate and submit the site-map to Google. It is not only Google but also Yahoo, Ask and Bing etc. are becoming major players in this field. But, I could not understand for long, how to do it. Of course, even if it is not submitted, in the long run Google and other search engines will know, but that takes a long time. so, I got a very easy way to do this; i.e. through AddMe web site, and wanted to share my experience with people like me.

One has to go to http://www.addme.com and register there. In the SEO tool drop down menu, find Google site-map generator, click and put the required information there and click generate. The XML site map will be generated and sent to the e-mail address. That has to be downloaded to the computer. Once done, the file has to be uploaded to a on-line storage site; I use mediafire.com. It is not difficult. After that the URL of the file has to be copied by the browser, login to AddMe and find site-map submission from the SEO tools from the drop down menu. Now the URL has to be put in the appropriate place along with other required information; and is to be pinged. That will submit the site-map to Google, yahoo. bing and ask simultaneously. Below is a screen shot of the last part. And you are done.

Conservative Management of Diverticular Disease of Colon

Please read the details. Life style modification improves many aspects of life.

Conservative Management of Diverticular Disease of Colon

Sometimes termed as "Left sided appendicitis", diverticulosis of colon; may run relatively a benign course or exacerbate at some point of time to give rise to emergency situation. It is mostly due to segmentation and pressure build up following motility disorder of colon. It may also be congenital in nature. Mostly the left lower colon is involved, but it can affect any part and so much so, the whole colon.
Generally, a patient of diverticular disease of colon can be long term managed with;

  • Avoiding non-residual diet. Residual diets including diet with high fiber content is to be preferred.

  • Animal proteins which cause constipation and allow segmentation are best avoided.

  • Physical exercise.

  • Abstinence from alcohol.

  • Some Yogic exercises are to be practiced.

  • Good check of Diabetes is to be done if suffering from.

  • One can lead a reasonably good quality life, if the recommendations are followed.Read more at www.articlesbase.com

Non Surgical Managemant of Heart Burn

Barret's EsophagusImage by drppanda via Flickr
Heart burn, a burning sensation with reflux of stomach contents to oesophagus, felt behind the sternum is a burning problem for the sufferer and the treating physician. Hydrochloric acid naturally present in the stomach, secreted in response to the food, normally does not come to oesophagus; prevented by a sphincter like locking mechanism in association with the diaphragm. But, if it comes back to the oesophagus causes burning symptoms, mostly due to a faulty sphincter mechanism located between the junction of oesophagus and stomach. If that is the case, a few surgical options are available with good success rate. But, a number patients can be treated by non-surgical means. If chosen, certain things are to be followed which will perhaps relieve the discomfort to a larger extent.
    Those could be;
    • Yogic practices to strengthen the sphincter mechanism, which may be in fault may help. Though it is simple, should be learnt from an experienced person. It is Pranayam, slow inhalation of external air to the fullest extend over a period of time and exhaling the same. It gives a good exercise to the diaphragm, and over the time may help to strengthen it around the exit of oesophagus from thorax to the abdomen.
    • The next thing perhaps is modification of food habit. Over the time the sufferer knows which foods cause or exacerbate the problem. Mostly spicy and chilly foods give rise to the symptoms. Those foods can be best avoided.
    • Life style modification plays an important role in this disease. Sedentary life style help to accumulate a lot of abdominal fat and does not give the diaphragm a good exercise. So, physical exercise eases the symptoms.
    • Then food habit has to be modified.
    1. Longer fasting period should be avoided, Food at regular intervals keeps the acid diluted.
    2. Drinking of water may be delayed for about half an hour after taking food.
    3. Sleeping immediately after taking food can be avoided, instead remaining in up right posture and a little walk inside the room helps.
    4. Use of pillow under neck while sleeping may help to restrict the reflux some extent.
    • As regards drugs;
    1. Stomach motility modifying drugs, Viz. domperidone and ondensetron likely to help.
    2. A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to reduce acid out put and increase the PH of stomach content; may be taken on demand rather than a regular basis. PPIs give so much relief that one becomes dependent on it. Long term use of these drugs has been seen to create gastrointestinal problems, should best be avoided.
    • Some antacids can be taken for immediate relief.
    • If no drug is available at hand, drinking one or two glasses of water will relieve the symptoms.
    •  I hope all the above measure will help many sufferers to avoid a surgery.

Desert Dust may Exacerbate Children's Asthma

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Dust blown from faraway deserts may accumulate in the air to levels great enough to contribute to children's asthma attacks, a new study suggests.

They found that between 2005 and 2009, the region had a total of six heavy-dust days from February through April -- when mineral-dust levels in the air were above 1 milligram per cubic meter.

During that same time frame, 620 children between the ages of 1 and 15 were hospitalized for an asthma exacerbation. In general, children's risk of being hospitalized was 88 percent higher on a heavy-dust day compared with other days, and similarly elevated during the week following a major dust event.

While there may be no advisories on desert dust specifically, levels of so-called particulate matter -- especially "coarse" dust particles known as PM10 -- also rise on heavy-dust days, Kanatani noted.

According to Kanatani, a hazy sky is a good initial clue that levels of particulate matter are high that day, and it may be a good idea to limit asthmatic children's time outdoors. But parents can also go online to check local PM levels, the researcher noted.

In the U.S., local news outlets generally provide daily air-quality indices; they are also available on the government Web site AIRNow, at www.airnow.gov.
