Painful Bleeding per Urethra can be due to Urinary Stone

Posted by Prahallad Panda on 6:58 PM Comments

Three-dimensional reconstructed CT scan image ...Image via WikipediaBleeding whether frank or small in amount, accompanied by pain either in urethra or in abdomen are the hallmarks of stone in urinary tract, technically called painful haematuria.
A stone usually forms in the kidney; but may form in urinary bladder. After formation in the kidney it descends down through the urinary tract. Sometimes it is struck en route, anywhere from ureter to urethra. Movement of stone causes pain and bleeding is from the mechanical effect.
According to location of the stone pain may be felt at a particular place in the abdomen. Its severity also depends on the location. A stone in the ureter, the collecting tube of urine causes maximum pain to be followed by a stone in urethra or urinary bladder. In kidney the pain is usually a constant moderate ache.
The very characteristic of pain due to stone in ureter makes the diagnosis easier. It follows a path from loin to groin or urethra; and is very severe; patient does not get comfort in may position; just rolls about.
Not rarely a stone passes out in urine giving relief from pain and bleeding to the patient.
Now-a-days, the diagnosis is very much easy due to advent of ultrasonogram. A plain x-rays may show a radiopaque shadow in the line of urinary system. There are many more investigations available to reach to the diagnosis of the root cause of stone formation and to know the health of urinary system.
Drinking as much of water that can give an urine output of about 1.5 to 2 liters/day is the priceless advice and the simplest way to prevent stone formation. But, seldom people follow this advice.

Common adverse effects of tobacco smoking (See...Common Adverse Effects of Smoking Some think occasional cigarette smoking may not be harmful. But, in a new study, researchers established that the chemicals present in the tobacco smoke act within 20 t0 30 minutes and cause damage to the DNA.
From several chemicals the cancer causing substance is paracyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These chemicals are quickly found in the blood stream after smoking. Those get attached to the DNA to cause the change in the script.
That is why wisdom lies in avoiding smoking; be it first hand, second hand or third hand; all together.

Bone Strengthening Drugs may Cause Breakage

Posted by Prahallad Panda on 7:16 PM Comments

The popular group of drugs, Bisphosphonates recommended for osteoporosis may be responsible for atypical bone fracture. The physicians and patients should be well aware of it.

Amplify’d from www.accessdata.fda.gov
Update on Femur Fracture Risk with Bisphosphonates
The FDA has issued updated information on atypical fractures of the femur associated with the use of bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis. These drugs include Fosamax (alendronate sodium), Actonel (risedronate sodium), Boniva (ibandronate sodium), Atelvia (risedronate sodium), Reclast (zoledronic acid), and their generic equivalents.
The femur fractures seen with bisphosphonates have been subtrochanteric and diaphyseal, which are uncommon --- accounting for less than one percent of the hip and femur fractures that occur in the population overall. Although it is not clear that the drugs are a direct cause of these unusual fractures, they have mainly been reported in patients taking bisphosphonates.
This safety information will appear in the drugs' labeling, as well as in a Medication Guide that will be distributed to patients with each prescription.

Is Breast Cancer Painful?

Posted by Prahallad Panda on 8:00 PM Comments

The arrow on this mammogram points to a small ...Image of Mamogram in Breast Cancer The main symptom that brings one to a doctor is pain. In that sense pain is a good symptom, which compels a person to attend a doctor.
The tragedy is that no cancer is painful in the early stage, so also the breast cancer. That is why cancer patients come in late to the doctor. In rural India ladies are shy enough to talk about something related to breast;and resist themselves to consult a doctor if there is a painless abnormality.
That is why, there a lot of campaign for self examination of breast for suspected lesion, which is very much accessible to self. Still many take long time to express their problem, when it comes to breast cancer.
There are several other accessible organs like skin, testis and anal region; where early diagnosis of cancer is possible.
It would have been better, if cancer more so the breast cancer would have been causing pain from the early stage. That could have saved many lives.

Quitting Smoking Not Difficult

Posted by Prahallad Panda on 7:25 PM Comments

I know many people who left smoking and even drinking without depending on any supportive drug for that. It is the matter of your determination, that counts a lot.
By recommending a substitute that contains the same ingredient, nicotine in case of tobacco smoking, we give the person another thing, to which he/she may get habituated. That is dangerous and again does not fulfil our purpose. That only promotes another brand of nicotine.
I would like to say, most of the things, if not everything are possible. It is the die hard who succeeds. We must develop a self confidence, not over confidence; that, "It is possible on my part".

Smoking is injurious to health. Everyone knows about this and the warning is also provided on the cigarette boxes. But the fact is, once you start smoking, you are addicted to it and no matter how hard you try, it is difficult to quit smoking. Once you get nicotine cravings, you have to smoke.
