Male infertility may be an early and identifiable risk factor for the later development of aggressive prostate cancer, a large study found.

In discussing why infertility and prostate cancer might be linked, the investigators explained that recent studies have implicated defects on the Y chromosome with both conditions and also with disease-specific mortality.

Defects that may contribute include faulty DNA repair and, in particular, defects in DNA mismatch repair. Other genetic abnormalities also may play a part, according to the investigators.

“Although the downstream effects of these abnormalities may lead directly to disease, they also may increase susceptibility to the negative influence of environmental factors,” they wrote.
