Changing the way you eat may lower your risk of heart attack, and the DASH diet could do it. The DASH diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and eating less fat, red meat and sweets.

At Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, researchers measured changes in blood pressure in 436 people whose blood pressure was high or close to it. The researchers also computed the estimated 10-year risk of heart disease.

Johns Hopkins’ Nisa Maruthur:

"Those assigned to the DASH diet experienced an 18 percent greater reduction in estimated heart disease risk, compared to those who were assigned to the typical American diet."  (8 seconds)

The study in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
