India is now off the WHO list of polio endemic countries. She has to remain free of polio for next 2 years to achieve the status of polio-free country.
There were 4 nations in the list; Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan, including India.
India tried her best to wipe out polio for last several years with routine polio immunisation and intense polio immunisation drive, several times in a year as "Pulse Polio" campaign.
The main problem is to educate the general public to take the immunisation as a saviour for their children. Thanks to increased hospital births, increased literacy status, concerted effort by healthcare staffs and awareness among the new patents; this has been possible.
The important part is maintenance of cold chain for polio vaccine till that reaches the beneficiary, so that the potency remains intact.
Let us hope to be a"Polio-Free" country and remain free of disability that causes in young age.
