Fasting in a Module can Help Patients of Type II Diabetes Mellitus and CVD


In India fasting is considered as a holy practice among different religions on various occasions or auspicious days. Hindus observe it intermittently on several occassions, Muslims in their month long fast during Ramdan and like that in Jain culture during Paryushan.

Now-a-days, these traditions are in decline in Indian culture. Also, there has been a shift in lifestyle more in favor of a sedentary one.
The cause of diabetes popularly projected as insulin resistance, obesity and pancreatic beta cell dysfunction. The pancreatic beta cells are responsible for production of insulin in response to glucose.
In type I diabetics there is no beta cell function, where as in Type II diabetics are is some beta cell function.
In contrast to western population where obesity is very common in India lean diabetics are very common.
So, it is logical to think that something other than obesity and insulin resistance might be playing a role in T2DM in India. It is found that there is dysfunction of Beta cells as well as decline in Beta cell mass in these lean Indian.

A British researcher says existing research indicates intermittent fasting may help those with diabetes and cardiovascular disease, alongside with weight loss.
Fasting can be intermittent, on a given number of consecutive or alternate days. The basic format of intermittent fasting is to alternate days eating "normally" with days when calorie consumption is restricted. This can either be done on alternative days, or where two days each week are classed as "fasting days’.
The review, published in the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease, found evidence from clinical trials showed fasting could limit inflammation, improve levels of sugars and fats in circulation, and reduce blood pressure.
In addition, the study found fasting bodies change how they select which fuel to burn, improving metabolism and reducing oxidative stress.
Previously, it has been claimed by UK doctors that T2DM can be reversed by severe calorie restriction i.e. just 600 calories per day. The role of calorie restriction was also published in the Diabetologia.
Fasting also appeared to aid those with ischemic heart disease by raising levels of adiponectin; a protein that has several important roles in carbohydrate, lipid metabolism and vascular biology.

Melatonin and Risk of Developing Diabetes Mellitus

Melatonin is a hormone secreted from pineal gland located in the under surface of brain. Its’ secretion is influenced by light and dark; dark inducing its release.

In addition to inducing sleep, it also acts on different organs of body and influence their functions too. So it regulates the “biological clock” responsible for sleep/wake pattern.

It has been seen that people engaged in night shift duty are prone to develop type II diabetes (DM Type II) mellitus, obesity and heart disease.
As reported in ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012), it has been found that mutation in certain melatonin receptor proteins may be responsible for development of DM Type II.
The release of insulin, which regulates blood sugar level, is known to be regulated by melatonin to some extent. Also, it has a role in regulating hormones from adrenal gland; glucocorticoids and adrenaline; those have role in regulating blood sugar.
The researchers suggest that mutations in the MT2 gene may disrupt the link between the body clock and insulin release, leading to abnormal control of blood sugar.

Diabetes Curable with 600 Calorie per Day Diet?

The British doctors say, they can cure type II diabetes with 600 calorie per day diet. They claim to have reversed diabetes in 11 people.

(CBS) Can a diet cure type 2 diabetes? That's what British researchers are saying, after a low calorie diet reversed diabetes for 11 people.
For the eight week study - published in the June 24 issue of "Diabetologia"- researchers tracked the insulin levels of the diabetics as they ate an extreme 600-calorie-a-day diet consisting solely of diet shakes and non-starchy vegetables. After one week on the diet, the diabetics' blood sugar levels were no longer elevated. After eight weeks on the diet, their bodies' regained the ability to make insulin, essentially curing them of diabetes.

Researcher say, impotence is predictor of heart attack for the fact that, when penile arteries are narrowed what speak of coronary arteries. Impotence is a strong predictor of heart attack and death among high-risk patients, German researchers have said.

The study of 1,519 men who already had cardiovascular disease found those who were also impotent had twice the risk of a heart attack or death as the rest.
Impotence is linked to inadequate blood flow in the penile arteries.
These are much smaller than coronary arteries.
So for some men, a persistent failure to get an erection might be an early sign that his arteries are narrowing.
As well as being twice as likely to die or have a heart attack, those with impotence were also 10% more likely to have a stroke and 20% more likely to be hospitalised for heart failure, after adjusting for factors like age and smoking.
The study confirms previous research that has linked impotence and cardiovascular disease. It has been welcomed by British experts.
