Proton Pump Inhibitors In Treatment of Acid peptic Disease

Posted by Dr Prahallad Panda on 7:36 PM Comments

Some years ago acid pep[tic disease was much more prevalent in the world and also in India. Many variant of surgeries evolved, each having inherent problems. Around 1980, the medicinal treatment of this disease changed the whole scenario. The new proton pump inhibitors (PPI), actually working very nicely to heal the ulcers in the duodenum and stomach. The inhibitors block the pump located in the peptic cells and block the secretion of hydrogen ions; and the ulcers heal naturally. Now-a-days, combination of proton pump inhibitors and agents to tackle H. Pylori are being prescribed; the result is infrequent surgeries for peptic ulcer.

Here is a picture of an ulcer in the lower end of stomach;

The same patient after a treatment period of one and half months; The ulcer has healed almost completely.

And that is the wonder of treatment.
