Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP), in the industrial town of La Seyne-sur-Mer was manufacturing and selling it since long. Now, it has come to the notice that the silicone gel used in some 30,000 implants are not of medical grade and prone to rapture; and are to be removed.
  •  The silicone inside the implants is not medical grade - but was intended for use in mattresses.
  • Tests have not shown any increased risk of toxicity from this filler compared to normal implants.
  • But mechanical testing has shown the implant covers have an increased risk of rupturing.
  • The gel inside can be irritative, increasing the risk of inflammation reaction - making removal more difficult.
  • There is no increased breast cancer risk.
  • One case of a rare form of cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) was recently reported in France.
  • French and US experts suggest there is a small but increased risk of this cancer for women with breast implants in general.
It also has been reported in Herald Sun that materials used in the faulty implants, include Baysilone, Silopren and Rhodorsil, all of which are industrial products never tested or approved for clinical use.

French authorities including health safety agency AFSSAPS already knew that the implants contained industrial rather than medical quality silicone, but this is the first time the use of petrol industry additives has been reported.
Those are now intended to be removed by funding from Govt. And PIP implants are banned.
